Chapter 17

Several of the children approached Sonya, but she took a step back. Her nose wrinkled in horror as she held up both her hands to hold them at bay. “No hugs. You’re filthy.”

The two older children holding the water hose with the spray going full force turned back toward Axel and Meredith for just a couple of seconds. They now looked like they had just played in the mud.

Rosa wiggled down and walked up to her. “It’s okay, Miss Sonya. I will make them bathe.”

Instantly they turned the hose toward the movie star, missing Rosa altogether. A scream escaped Sonya’s mouth, and her hands were flying in all directions like a Ninja fighting a spiderweb.

“Stop. Stop,” she screamed.

One more step backward, and she slipped into the mud puddle they’d created. The water hit the puddle and bounced mud over her body and hair. The white blouse was now chocolate color, as was her skin.

“Enough, boys. Rosa, go to Meredith.”

She obeyed as he walked over to Sonya and pulled her up out of the hole. He couldn’t help but burst into laughter at the once-prissy prima donna who huffed and puffed at her hair that had fallen out of the tightly twirled bun at her nape. She flung the mud at him, only to have it thrown back.

“Come on. You can clean up inside.” Axel choked back his amusement.

He turned to explain to Meredith he needed to take care of this, but she was flinging mud at the children then grabbed the hose and chased them around the yard. She was yelling idle threats at them for getting her muddy, and laughing. He wondered if he had ever heard anything so beautiful. Glancing back at Sonya who was trying desperately to remove mud from her clothes and body only made him understand how he had dodged a bullet when he left Hollywood.

Now, what was he going to do about Meredith?
